Johnny Hoffman, Betty Lamb, Blackie Graves, and JW Issacs are legendary breeders who are still recognized for their contributions to the Texas Longhorn cattle breed. Each one of them utilized Butler genetics extensively as they built their programs.
You take the Butler out of your herd and you’ll take the horn out of your herd.
---Johnny Hoffman
Today’s breeding legends like Owen McGill and Bob Loomis have recognized the importance of Butler genetics, and have built elite herds resulting in some of the most sought after genetics in the Longhorn industry. While straight Butler cattle won’t necessarily have as long a tip-to-tip horn measurement as the blended Longhorns, they do contribute the hybrid vigor needed to produce long horns when combined with the blended genetics.
Stanley Cattle Company has been fortunate to have two high selling lots at the Butler Breeders Invitational Sale. Very few breeders can say this. We’ve worked hard over the last 11 years to build on a foundation of proven Butler genetics.
Unfortunately, many in today’s Longhorn industry have gotten caught up in one-trait selection at the expense of historic traits that have set the Longhorn apart from other cattle breeds and allowed them to survive for hundreds of years... mothering ability, browse utilization, and disease resistance. At Stanley Cattle Company, we haven’t lost sight of these important traits.
The biggest dollars spent on Longhorns are for those with the long horns, and that’s just fine. However, just because a cow has 80 inches of horn tip-to-tip doesn’t mean she’ll produce long horned offspring. If there is a mature cow in our herd with less than 60 inches tip-to-tip, she’s here because she’s a proven producer, plus she’ll raise a calf with the historic Longhorn traits.
